How the PSLE AL Scoring System Works

The Achievement Level (AL) scoring system was introduced by MOE in 2021 to replace the old T-Score system. Unlike the T-Score which ranked students against each other, the AL system grades each student based on their individual achievement.

Mark Ranges for Each Achievement Level

Achievement LevelMark RangeDescription
AL190-100Excellent mastery
AL285-89Very good understanding
AL380-84Good understanding
AL475-79Adequate understanding
AL565-74Basic understanding
AL645-64Developing understanding
AL720-44Emerging understanding
AL80-19Minimal understanding

đź’ˇ Lower Score = Better

In the AL system, a lower total score is better. The best possible PSLE score is 4 (AL1 in all subjects), and the lowest is 32 (AL8 in all subjects).

Why the Mark Ranges Are Uneven

You might notice that AL1-4 have narrower ranges (5 marks each), while AL5-8 have wider ranges. This is intentional:

  • Top bands (AL1-4): MOE expects slightly less than half of students to achieve these levels, so narrower ranges provide meaningful differentiation
  • Lower bands (AL5-8): Students’ scores are more widely distributed here, so broader ranges reduce unnecessary fine differentiation

Foundation Level Subjects

If your child is taking Foundation level subjects instead of Standard, the grading works differently:

Foundation GradeMaps to Standard AL
Grade AAL6
Grade BAL7
Grade CAL8

⚠️ Foundation Subject Impact

Foundation subjects can only achieve a maximum of AL6. This limits the best possible PSLE score to 6 (if one subject is Foundation) or higher depending on how many Foundation subjects are taken.

Understanding Posting Groups (From 2024)

From 2024 onwards, the old Express, N(A), and N(T) streams were replaced with three Posting Groups:

Total PSLE ScorePosting GroupSubject Levels
4-20Posting Group 3G3 subjects (formerly Express)
21-22Posting Group 2 or 3G2 or G3 depending on school
23-24Posting Group 2G2 subjects (formerly N(A))
25Posting Group 1 or 2G1 or G2 subjects
26-30Posting Group 1G1 subjects (formerly N(T))*

*Requires AL7 or better in both English and Math

Subject-Based Banding (SBB)

The new system allows students to take subjects at different levels (G1, G2, G3) based on their strengths. A student in Posting Group 2 can take individual subjects at G3 level if they excel in those areas.

Example Calculations

Example 1: Strong Overall Performance

Marks:

English: 82 | Math: 92 | Science: 88 | Mother Tongue: 76

Conversion:

  • English: 82 marks = AL3
  • Math: 92 marks = AL1
  • Science: 88 marks = AL2
  • Mother Tongue: 76 marks = AL4

Total PSLE Score: 3 + 1 + 2 + 4 = 10

Posting Group: Group 3 (G3 subjects)

Example 2: Mixed Performance

Marks:

English: 70 | Math: 85 | Science: 62 | Mother Tongue: 55

Conversion:

  • English: 70 marks = AL5
  • Math: 85 marks = AL2
  • Science: 62 marks = AL6
  • Mother Tongue: 55 marks = AL6

Total PSLE Score: 5 + 2 + 6 + 6 = 19

Posting Group: Group 3 (G3 subjects)

Example 3: With Foundation Subject

Marks:

English: 75 | Math: 80 | Science: 68 | Mother Tongue (Foundation): Grade A

Conversion:

  • English: 75 marks = AL4
  • Math: 80 marks = AL3
  • Science: 68 marks = AL5
  • Mother Tongue (Foundation A): = AL6

Total PSLE Score: 4 + 3 + 5 + 6 = 18

Posting Group: Group 3 (G3 subjects)

Secondary School Cut-Off Points

Your total PSLE score determines which secondary schools you can apply to. Here are typical cut-off point ranges for 2025 admissions:

Top Schools (AL 4-8)

  • Raffles Girls’ School (IP): AL 5
  • Nanyang Girls’ High School (IP): AL 6
  • Hwa Chong Institution (IP): AL 6
  • CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School (IP): AL 7
  • Anglo-Chinese School (Independent): AL 8-10
  • St Joseph’s Institution: AL 7-9
  • CHIJ Secondary (Various): AL 9-12
  • Methodist Girls’ School: AL 10-12

Neighbourhood Schools (AL 15-22)

Most neighbourhood secondary schools have cut-off points ranging from AL 15-22, offering quality education with lower competition for admission.

đź’ˇ Cut-Off Points Change Yearly

School cut-off points vary each year based on demand and cohort performance. Use the MOE School Finder for the most up-to-date information.

Tie-Breaker Rules

When multiple students have the same PSLE score competing for limited spots, MOE uses these tie-breakers in order:

  1. Citizenship: Singapore Citizens have priority, followed by PRs, then international students
  2. School Choice Order: Students who ranked the school higher get priority
  3. Computerised Balloting: Random selection if the above are equal

According to MOE simulations, approximately 90% of students will secure their placements without needing balloting.

Tips for PSLE Preparation

Based on the AL scoring bands, here are strategic tips:

Focus on Moving Up One AL

Each AL band improvement matters:

  • Moving from 84 to 85 marks = AL3 to AL2 (saves 1 point)
  • Moving from 74 to 75 marks = AL5 to AL4 (saves 1 point)

⚠️ The Cliff Effect

Be aware of “cliff” marks: 75, 80, 85, 90. Scoring 74 vs 75 is a one-mark difference but changes your AL from 5 to 4. Focus extra attention on subjects near these thresholds.

Subject-Specific Strategies

  1. Strongest subjects: Aim for AL1-2 to maximise your advantage
  2. Weaker subjects: Focus on reaching the next AL band threshold
  3. Use the calculator above to set realistic targets for each subject

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best possible PSLE score?

The best possible score is 4 (AL1 in all four subjects: English, Math, Science, Mother Tongue).

What happens if I get the same score as many other students?

MOE uses tie-breakers: citizenship, school choice order, then computerised balloting.

Can I still go to a good school with a high AL score?

Yes! Many excellent schools have cut-off points in the AL 15-20 range. Choose schools based on fit, not just prestige.

Does Higher Chinese affect my PSLE score?

No, Higher Chinese is not part of the four standard subjects. However, achieving Distinction (D), Merit (M), or Pass (P) in HCL gives you bonus points for SAP school admissions.

When are PSLE results released?

PSLE results are typically released in late November, about 2 months after the written examinations.
